The day after tomorrow is World Animal Day! That means that, during the entire day, you HAVE to spoil and show complete appreciation to any animal you come across. I don't make the rules 🤷♂️
Even though I don't have a dog, I wanted to make something special for World Animal Day regardless, just in case I happen to meet any. Surprisingly, well-researched recipes for dog treats are rather hard to find - many ingredients you'd usually use in cookies are unhealthy for dogs and I wanted to make these as safe as possible - so I had to make my own! And even if I don't come across any dogs, they're technically safe for human consumption, so they might come in handy either way - you never know!
(Note: I ended up meeting many throughout the day and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive)
Just so you know: yes, I have tried them myself and no, they're not the best cookies I've ever had, but what do you expect? Many ingredients you'd usually use in cookies are unhealthy for dogs and I wanted to make these as safe as possible. If you wanted to make them actually tasty for the human palate, please add some salt. Just don't feed them to your dog then.
Would you like to know how to make these simple little gluten free and vegetarian peanut butter and cheese treats yourself? Just scroll down!
Ingredients
Biscuits
1 egg
400 g peanut butter (100% peanut)
40 g honey
200 ml water
100 g grated cheese (low salt - young Gouda works great)
450 g oat flour
Icing
70 g peanut butter (100% peanut)
40 g honey
80 g cornstarch
90 ml water
Extra grated cheese, if desired
Instructions
Biscuits
Preheat oven to 180°C. Combine the wet ingredients and cheese and mix them into the flour. Roll the dough out into a ~4 mm thick sheet on a floured surface and cut with a cookie cutter.
Bake biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool on a rack.
Icing
Heat the peanut butter and honey au bain marie until liquid. Mix in the cornstarch and gradually add the flour until you reach the thickness you prefer. Pipe the icing onto the biscuits using a piping bag.
You could sprinkle some extra grated cheese on top to make the treats even more irresistible!
Notes
You can store these cookies for a good while as long as you store them dry. Use your senses to tell you when they're starting to go off ;)
